This collectible vintage text book belonged to my grandmother Virgie E. Slemmons and has her signature in the front along with “Peniel U. Peniel Texas” and other notes in pencil.
The Brazoria County Historical Museum located in Brazoria County’s historic 1897 courthouse collects preserves and exhibits artifacts that relate the history of and which reflect the County’s cultural and demographic diversity. A copy of this same text book is also housed in their catalog of objects in the museum. As my grandmother grew up in Texas this museum reflects her heritage.
The Norwood Press was formed in 1894 by several individual companies comingtogether to form a company that covered all aspects of the book-making process.They built a new factory on Washington Street in Norwood.The J.S. Cushing & Co. handled composition and typesetting and Berwick& Smith Co. was the pressroom. In 1897 the bindery E. Fleming & Co.(later known as C.B. Fleming & Co.) joined the Norwood Press to completethe book-making process. Norwood Press specialized in textbooks bibles catalogues and pamphlets and became one of the largest companies of its kind.
